Jatin (जतिन) is usually explained on name lists as "one with matted hair", a name of Lord Shiva. That sense belongs to Sanskrit jaṭin, which Monier-Williams gives as wearing matted locks, an ascetic, and a name of Śiva. The name, however, is written with a soft dental t in Hindi, and in Bengal it is spelt যতীন, the Sanskrit yatin, "an ascetic or devotee", which Bengali pronounces with a j-. So the two explanations are close in spirit, since both describe a renunciant, but the spelling fits yatin better. Jatin is often short for Jatindra or Yatīndra, "lord of ascetics". The Bengali revolutionary Jatindranath Mukherjee was known as Bagha Jatin.
