Jhilmil (झिलमिल) is one of Hindi's playful echo words, used for light that flickers and dances. Platts's 1884 dictionary defines it as the sparkling or flashing of water in sunlight, twinkling and scintillation; the related verb jhilmilānā means "to sparkle, twinkle". The same word also names a fine gauze and a slatted blind that lets light through in stripes. Name lists give it as "sparkling" or "twinkling", which matches the dictionary. It is a cheerful, informal name, also used as a pet name.
