Kirtana (कीर्तना) comes from Sanskrit kīrtana, from the root kīrt. Monier-Williams defines kīrtana as mentioning, repeating, saying or telling, and lists the feminine kīrtanā both in that sense and as 'fame'. In Hindi the word grew a warmer meaning: Platts's Hindustani dictionary of 1884 gives kīrtan as mention and report, but also as singing aloud, shouting for joy, celebrating, praising, and fame or glory. That is the sense behind kirtan, devotional singing, and behind the popular glosses 'praise', 'hymn' and 'devotional song', which are therefore well grounded in Hindi even though the old Sanskrit dictionary does not give them. The name is most often spelled Keerthana, especially in South India.
