Kranti (क्रांति) comes from Sanskrit krānti, from the verb kram, "to step, to go". Monier-Williams gives its senses as going, proceeding, a step, and overcoming or surpassing; in astronomy it is the declination of a planet and the sun's path along the ecliptic. In modern Hindi and Marathi the word means "revolution", the sense behind krāntikārī, "revolutionary", and that is how the name is usually explained today. The older dictionaries treat it as forward movement instead. Platts also records a Hindi krānti meaning splendour or lustre.
