Manpreet (ਮਨਪ੍ਰੀਤ) combines man, the mind or inner self, which the Mahan Kosh also renders as the heart, with prīt, love or affection, from Sanskrit prīti. The pairing comes from Sikh scripture: the phrase man(i) prīt(i), love held within the mind, occurs in the Guru Granth Sahib, for example at Ang 82 and Ang 240. Monier-Williams gives Sanskrit prīti as pleasure, joy and gladness as well as kindness, affection and love, which is why name lists also offer "joy of the heart" or "beloved of the heart". The name is used for both boys and girls. Manpreet Singh captained India's men's hockey team to an Olympic bronze medal at Tokyo in 2021.
