Mekhala meaning
Mekhala (मेखला) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, मे, it is a Simha rashi name (Magha nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
A girdle, belt or zone; anything that encircles
Also used to mean: waistband
Mekhala (मेखला) is the Sanskrit mekhalā, which Monier-Williams defines as a girdle, belt or zone, including the sacred girdle given at the thread ceremony and the jewelled waistband worn by women. In compounds it means anything that encircles, so the earth is called sāgara-mekhalā, "girdled by the ocean", and a mountain's slope is its mekhalā. The dictionary also records it as the name of several women. Name lists give girdle or waistband, matching the dictionary. The Tamil epic Manimekalai, "jewelled girdle", is named after its heroine. Mekhala is used mainly in Kerala and Assam.
