Naina meaning
Naina (नैना) is a Hindu girl's name of Hindi origin (from Sanskrit nayana).
The eye (poetic)
Naina (नैना) is a Hindi word for the eye, used especially in poetry. Platts's dictionary records nainā in this sense and traces it through Prakrit to Sanskrit nayana. Monier-Williams gives nayana as the eye, explained as "the leading organ", from the root nī, "to lead", and the same word also means leading, guiding or conducting. Name lists give "eyes", which matches the dictionary. The name also recalls Naina Devi, the hilltop temple of the goddess in Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh, a Shakti pitha where, in tradition, the eye of the goddess Sati fell. Naina is sometimes spelled Nayna.
