Nishit (निशित) matches Sanskrit niśita, "sharpened", which Monier-Williams cites from the Katha Upanishad and the Mahabharata; it can also mean roused or eager, strengthened, and as a noun, iron or steel. Name lists, however, usually give Nishit as "midnight". That sense belongs to a neighbouring word, niśītha, "midnight, night", from niśā, "night", which also gives the name Nishith. Families often treat the two spellings as one name, so both meanings circulate, but in Sanskrit they are separate words.
