Nitin (नितिन) is an Indian boy's name that the old dictionaries do not record. Name lists link it to Sanskrit nīti, which Monier-Williams gives as guidance or management, and above all as good conduct: proper and wise behaviour, prudence, policy, political wisdom and moral philosophy. On that reading Nitin would mean "one who has nīti", which is why lists give it as "moral", "ethical" or "master of the right path". The form itself is not attested, however, and the usual Hindi spelling has a short i, नितिन, rather than the long ī of नीति. We therefore show the likely root rather than a confirmed meaning.
