Balaji (बालाजी) is a devotional title. It is usually explained as Sanskrit bāla, "child, young", which Monier-Williams records with senses such as a boy, a young one and the newly risen sun, joined to the Hindi honorific -jī. Across India, and above all in the South, Balaji means Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala, a form of Vishnu, and that is the meaning baby-name lists give. In Rajasthan the same title is used for Hanuman, as at the Salasar and Mehandipur Balaji temples. Balaji Vishwanath, the first of the hereditary Peshwas of the Maratha state, bore the name.
