Om meaning
Om (ओम) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, ओ, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Rohini nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Sacred syllable of solemn assent, said before prayer and recitation
Om (ओम) is the sacred syllable of Hinduism. Monier-Williams describes it as a word of solemn affirmation and respectful assent, something like "yes, so be it", spoken before prayers and at the start and close of Vedic recitation. In the Upaniṣads it becomes a mystic syllable for meditation. Britannica explains that it is analysed as three sounds, a, u and m, standing for triads such as the three worlds and the three Vedas, and that it forms the whole subject of the Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad, which links the three sounds with waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Later tradition reads a + u + m as the Hindu triad of gods. The actor Om Puri, star of Ardh Satya, is a well-known bearer.
