Also used to mean: rainy season
Sawan (सावन) is the Hindi name of the monsoon month, from Sanskrit śrāvaṇa. Monier-Williams gives śrāvaṇa as one of the twelve Hindu months, falling in the rainy season, roughly July to August, and links the word to the lunar mansion Śravaṇa. In north India Sawan is the season of swings and rain songs such as kajri, and of special devotion to Shiva, when many devotees fast on Mondays and carry Ganga water on the Kanwar Yatra. Name lists give Sawan as "monsoon" or "rainy season".
