Vedansh (वेदांश) is read on Indian name lists as "part of the Vedas" or "part of knowledge", joining veda, sacred knowledge, with aṃśa, "a share or portion". Monier-Williams does have the word vedāṃśa, but with a different, more technical sense: "a quarter", one of four equal parts. That comes from another use of veda as the number four, since there are four Vedas. The dictionary cites it from a single medieval text, so it was never a common word. Parents who choose the name today clearly intend the knowledge sense, which is a fair reading of its two parts, but it is a modern meaning rather than the recorded one.
