Vedarth (वेदार्थ) joins Sanskrit veda, the sacred knowledge of the Vedas, and artha, "meaning, sense, purpose". Monier-Williams gives vedārtha as "the meaning or sense of the Veda", citing the law-book of Manu and the Mahābhārata, where it describes the true import of the scriptures that a learned person should grasp. The great Vedic commentator Sāyaṇa called his commentaries vedārtha-prakāśa, "light on the meaning of the Veda". Name lists give it as "essence" or "meaning of the Vedas", in line with the dictionary. It sits alongside Ved, Vedant, Vedang and Vedansh.
