Srabasti meaning
Srabasti (श्रावस्ती) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin (Bengali usage).
The ancient city of Śrāvastī, capital of Kosala
Srabasti (श्रावस्ती, Bengali শ্রাবস্তী) is the Bengali form of Śrāvastī, an ancient city north of the Ganges. Monier-Williams describes it as the old capital of Kosala, said to have been founded by a king named Śrāvasta, and as the place where the merchant Anāthapiṇḍika built the Buddha a residence in the Jetavana grove, which became his favourite retreat in the rainy season. The dictionary notes that the site has been identified with Sahet-Mahet, north of Ayodhya. Bengali readers also know the city from Jibanananda Das's poem "Banalata Sen", in which the poet compares a woman's face to the fine sculpture of Śrāvastī. Bengali pronounces the Sanskrit v as b, giving Srabasti.
