Vismay meaning
Vismay (विस्मय) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin.
Wonder, surprise, amazement; also pride
Vismay (विस्मय) is the Sanskrit vismaya, from vi-smi, "to wonder, to be astonished", a verb related to smi, "to smile". Monier-Williams gives it as wonder, surprise and amazement, and notes that in the theory of poetry vismaya is one of the lasting emotions, the one behind the sentiment of the marvellous. The same word can also mean pride or doubt, and a separate compound spelled the same way means "free from pride". Name lists give the name as "wonder" or "amazement", which matches the dictionary. It is the boys' form; Vismaya is used for girls in Kerala and Karnataka.
