Aarti meaning
Aarti (आरती) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin (via Hindi).
The lamp waved before a deity; the ceremony of waving it
Also used to mean: worship with lamps, light offering
Aarti (आरती) is named after the aarti, the Hindu ritual of waving lit lamps before a deity while a hymn is sung. The word comes from Sanskrit ārātrika, which Monier-Williams defines as the light, or the vessel holding it, that is waved before an image at night, and also the ceremony itself. Hindi shortened ārātrika to āratī. Name lists give "worship with lamps" or "light offering", in line with the dictionary. Aarti is used across India, written Arti in the north, Arati in Maharashtra and Bengal, and Aarthi in Tamil Nadu.
