Anaya (अनाया) is a modern girls' name whose origin is not settled. Indian name lists usually explain it as "without a superior" or "unique", but we could not find that sense in the Sanskrit dictionaries. The Sanskrit word closest in form, anaya, is a masculine noun with unfavourable senses: Monier-Williams records a-naya as "bad management, bad conduct" and an-aya as "an evil course, ill luck, misfortune". Because the name is written with a long final -ā and is used for girls, it may not come from that word at all. The popular meaning is best seen as a modern one that has grown up around the name. Some Muslim families also use Anaya as a spelling of the Arabic name Inaya, a different word.
