Prema (प्रेमा) is the girls' form of the Sanskrit word preman, "love". Monier-Williams gives love, affection, kindness, tender regard and fondness, and also joy and playful jest. In the devotional traditions centred on Krishna, prema came to mean the highest, selfless love for God. The masculine form is Prem, and Prema is used for girls. Name lists simply give "love" or "affection", in line with the dictionary.
