Basabdatta meaning
Basabdatta (वासवदत्ता) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin (Bengali usage). By its first sound, वा, it is a Vrishabh rashi name (Rohini nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
'given by Indra'; Udayana's queen and Subandhu's heroine
Basabdatta (वासवदत्ता, Bengali বাসবদত্তা) is the Bengali form of the Sanskrit Vāsavadattā. The name joins vāsava, a name of Indra as chief of the Vasus, with dattā, "given", and Monier-Williams glosses the masculine Vāsavadatta as "given by Indra". The feminine belongs to several women of story, above all the princess of Ujjayinī who became the queen of King Udayana of Vatsa. She is the heroine of Bhāsa's play Svapnavāsavadattam, "The Dream of Vāsavadattā", while Subandhu's prose romance Vāsavadattā tells of a different heroine with the same name. Bengali sounds the Sanskrit v as b, giving Basabdatta. A present-day bearer is the Bengali television and film actress Basabdatta Chatterjee.
