Fearful, formidable; name of the second Pandava
Bhim (भीम) is the Sanskrit bhīma, "fearful, terrible, formidable". In the Mahābhārata it is the name of the second Pāṇḍava, son of Kuntī and the wind god Vāyu, famed for his superhuman strength and nicknamed Vṛkodara, "wolf-belly", for his huge appetite. At the end of the great war he defeats Duryodhana in a duel with maces. Monier-Williams also lists Bhīma as a name of Rudra-Śiva. Name lists give Bhim as "formidable" or "mighty" and often name the hero, in line with the dictionary. In modern India the name is also closely linked with Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the Dalit leader who chaired the drafting committee of India's Constitution and whose first name begins with it.
