Amar meaning
Amar (अमर) is a Hindu and Sikh boy's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, अ, it is a Mesh rashi name (Krittika nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Immortal, undying; a god
Amar (अमर) is the Sanskrit a-mara, "undying", from the negative a- and mara, "dying". Monier-Williams gives it as immortal or imperishable, citing the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, Manu and the Rāmāyaṇa, and as a masculine noun simply meaning a god, since the gods are the deathless ones. The same entry lists Amara as a short name of Amarasiṃha, the renowned lexicographer, whom MW dates to probably the sixth century and counts among the "nine gems" said to have adorned the court of Vikramāditya. Amar is used by Hindu and Sikh families; the third Sikh Guru was Guru Amar Das. Name lists give it as "immortal", matching the dictionary.
