Chandrahas (चंद्रहास) is Sanskrit candra-hāsa. Hāsa means laughter and mirth, but also derision and dazzling whiteness, and Monier-Williams reads the compound as "moon-derider", something so bright it laughs at the moon. He gives it as a glittering scimitar, the sword of Rāvaṇa in the Rāmāyaṇa (in the Uttara Kāṇḍa it is a gift from Shiva), and the name of a prince. Baby-name lists give it as "smile of the moon" or "laughter of the moon", a gentler literal reading of the parts. The prince Chandrahasa of the Jaimini Bhārata, a favourite story in Karnataka, carries the name.
