Chandragupta meaning
Chandragupta (चंद्रगुप्त) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin.
'moon-protected'; name of the founder of the Maurya empire
Also used to mean: protected by the moon
Chandragupta (चंद्रगुप्त) is Sanskrit candra-gupta, "moon-protected", from candra, "moon", and gupta, "guarded". Monier-Williams records it as the name of the renowned king who reigned at Pāṭaliputra about 315 BC as founder of a new dynasty, known to the Greeks as Sandrokottos, and of two kings of the Gupta dynasty. That first king is Chandragupta Maurya, who with his minister Chanakya built the first empire to unite most of the subcontinent. Baby-name lists give the name as "protected by the moon". It is chosen today mostly for its history.
