Dinabandhu (दीनबंधु) joins dīna, which Monier-Williams gives as depressed, afflicted or miserable, with bandhu, a kinsman or friend. It means "friend of the afflicted", and in devotional poetry it is a title of God, especially Kṛṣṇa, as the friend of those in need. Indian name lists give "friend of the poor" or "friend of the humble". The name is used mainly in Bengal and Odisha. It was borne by the playwright Dinabandhu Mitra, whose Nil Darpan exposed the abuses of indigo planters, and Deenabandhu was the title of honour given to the missionary C. F. Andrews.
