Fiza (فضا) comes from Arabic faḍāʾ, written فضا in Persian and Urdu, where the Arabic ḍ is sounded as z. Steingass's Persian dictionary glosses it as space or roominess, an open field or plain, and a courtyard. In Urdu the word also means atmosphere, ambience or environment, and Rekhta's Urdu dictionary records these senses alongside spaciousness and openness. On name lists today Fiza is most often given as "breeze". That is the meaning many families use, but it is not a dictionary sense of the word, which means open space and, in Urdu, the air or atmosphere of a place. Fiza is a different name from Faiza (فائزہ), "successful", though the two are sometimes confused.
