Gargi meaning
Gargi (गार्गी) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin. By its first sound, गा, it is a Makar rashi name (Dhanishta nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Female descendant of Garga; name of the sage Gargi Vachaknavi
Also used to mean: wise, scholar
Gargi (गार्गी) is a Sanskrit family name: Monier-Williams gives gārgī as the feminine of gārgya, "descendant of Garga", an ancient line of sages. It is above all the name of Gārgī Vācaknavī, the woman philosopher of the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, whose fourteenth book contains the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad. At King Janaka's court she questions the sage Yājñavalkya twice, pressing him on what the whole world is woven upon until he speaks of the imperishable (akṣara). The dictionary also records Gārgī as a name of Durgā in the Harivaṃśa. Baby-name lists usually translate the name as "wise" or "scholar". That is a modern reading drawn from her fame rather than from the word, which simply means "of the Garga family".
