Holder of the mountain (from giri, mountain, and dhārin, holding)
Also used to mean: Lord Krishna
Girdhari (गिरधारी) is the Hindi form of a Sanskrit compound of giri, "mountain", and dhārin, which Monier-Williams gives as bearing, holding or possessing. It means "the one who holds the mountain" and recalls the story Monier-Williams tells under Govardhana: Krishna held that hill up on one finger for seven days to shelter the cowherds from a storm. Name lists give it as "holder of the mountain" or Lord Krishna. It is a traditional name in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, often as Girdharilal or Girdhari Lal, and is close in meaning to Giridhar.
