Girish meaning
Girish (गिरीश) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin.
Lord of the mountains; a name of Shiva
Girish (गिरीश) is the Sanskrit girīśa, from giri, "mountain", and īśa, "lord". Monier-Williams gives it as "mountain-lord", a name of Śiva, citing the Mahabharata and Kālidāsa's Kumārasambhava, and as one of the eleven Rudras; it can also mean a high mountain, and the mountain Himavat. A separate compound, gir-īśa, from gir, "speech", means "lord of speech" and names Bṛhaspati, regent of the planet Jupiter. Indian name lists give Girish as "lord of the mountains" or simply as a name of Shiva, matching the main dictionary sense. The playwright and actor Girish Karnad, a towering figure of modern Kannada theatre, is a well-known bearer.
In Hindu tradition this is a name of Shiva.
