Gurdial meaning
Gurdial (ਗੁਰਦਿਆਲ) is a Sikh boy's name of Punjabi origin.
Gur (the Guru) joined with dayāl (compassionate, merciful)
Also used to mean: kind guru
Gurdial (ਗੁਰਦਿਆਲ), also written Gurdayal, joins gur, the Guru, with dayāl. Dayāl comes from Sanskrit dayālu, full of compassion; the Mahan Kosh gives it as compassionate and merciful, and also as a giver. The Guru Granth Sahib often calls God and the Guru dayāl; on Ang 81 Guru Arjan speaks of meeting the Lord through the kind and compassionate True Guru. The name therefore means the compassionate Guru, close to the "kind guru" of name lists. It is a traditional Sikh boys' name. The novelist Gurdial Singh, author of Marhi Da Deeva (1964), received the Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honour, for 1999. The whole name is not a dictionary headword; its meaning comes from its two parts.
