Gurpartap meaning

Gurpartap (ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ) is a Sikh boy's name of Punjabi origin.

Gur (the Guru) joined with pratāp (glory, splendour, valour)

Gurpartap (ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ), also spelled Gurpratap, joins gur, the Guru, with pratāp. The Mahan Kosh gives pratāp as intense brilliance, prestige and valour, and the Guru Granth Sahib uses it for the glory of God on Ang 614, where Guru Arjan is filled with joy at the sight of the glory of the Primal Lord. The name therefore means the glory or majesty of the Guru. The phrase is familiar to Sikhs from the Gur Partap Suraj Granth, Bhai Santokh Singh's long verse history of the Gurus, completed in 1843. Name lists offer looser readings such as "light of the Guru". It is a traditional Sikh boys' name. The full name is not a Mahan Kosh headword, so its meaning is read from its two parts.
