Hamna meaning
Hamna (حمنہ) is a Muslim girl's name of Arabic origin.
Meaning today
Dark grape, warm-hearted
Original Arabic meaning
"a small tick; ḥamnān is also a small dark-red Taif grape"
Source: Lane, An Arabic–English Lexicon (1863–93), Book I, Part 2, p. 650 · entry ḥamn, ḥamnān, n. un. ḥamna (حَمْنٌ، حَمْنَانٌ), root ḥ-m-n · See the entry · checked 25 Oct 2026
Hamna (حمنہ) recalls Ḥamna bint Jaḥsh, a woman Companion of the Prophet and sister of his wife Zaynab bint Jaḥsh. The word itself is less flattering than name lists suggest. Lane's lexicon gives ḥamnān, of which ḥamna is the singular, as small ticks, and adds that ḥamnān was also a kind of small dark-red grape grown at Taif. Name lists usually say "dark grape" or "warm-hearted"; the second has no dictionary support. Most families choose the name to honour the Companion.
