Heer meaning
Heer (हीर) is a Hindu girl's name of Punjabi origin (Hindi hīr). By its first sound, ही, it is a Kark rashi name (Punarvasu nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
Hīr, heroine of the Punjabi romance Heer Ranjha; also diamond
Also used to mean: beloved
Heer (हीर) is first of all the heroine of Heer Ranjha, the most famous of the Punjabi love stories, best known in Waris Shah's poem of 1766, in which Heer of the Sial clan falls in love with Ranjha, a wandering flute player. Platts' Hindustani dictionary records Hīr as the name of that heroine, and lists a separate word hīr or hīra, "diamond", from Sanskrit hīra, which is why name lists often give Heer as "diamond". The name is used by Punjabi and Gujarati families, Hindu and Sikh alike.
