Himanshi (हिमांशी) is the feminine form of Himanshu, which is the Sanskrit himāṃśu, "cool-rayed", a poetic name for the moon in Monier-Williams, formed from hima, "cold", and aṃśu, "ray". Many name lists instead read Himanshi as hima, "snow", plus aṃśa, "part", and give it as "a part of snow". That reading is possible as a modern coinage, but the older word behind the pair Himanshu and Himanshi is the moon's name. The name is used in North India.
