Hiren (हिरेन) is a name used in Gujarat and Bengal that the old dictionaries do not record. Name lists give it as "diamond" or "lord of diamonds", linking it to Sanskrit hīra, which Monier-Williams gives as a diamond and also a thunderbolt, a lion and a name of Shiva. On that reading Hiren is a short form of hīra plus indra, "chief", but neither Hiren nor Hirendra is attested, so we show the likely root rather than a confirmed meaning. The Hindi word for diamond, hīrā, comes from the same source.
