Original Arabic (Urdu usage) meaning

"keeping a secret; also confiding or disclosing (verbal noun of asarra)"

Source: Lane, An Arabic–English Lexicon (1863–93), Book I, Part 4 (1872), p. 1337 · entry asarra (أَسَرَّ), isrār, root s-r-r · See the entry · checked 25 Oct 2026

Israr (اسرار) is usually explained from the Arabic root s-r-r, "secret". Lane's lexicon gives sirr as a secret and asrār as its plural, and asarra, whose verbal noun is isrār, as keeping a secret, though some lexicographers took it the opposite way, as disclosing one. Written in Urdu, اسرار can be read either isrār or asrār, "secrets", which is why name lists give "secrets" or "mystery". A few sites say "determination", from a similar-sounding word with ṣ, iṣrār, "insistence". The best-known bearer is the Pakistani Quran teacher Dr Israr Ahmed.
