Kanchi (कांची) is the Sanskrit kāñcī, which Monier-Williams defines as a girdle, especially a woman's ornamental waist-belt hung with tiny bells. It is also the old name of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, one of the seven sacred cities of Hindu tradition and a great centre of temples and silk weaving. Name lists often give "golden" or "bright", perhaps by association with Kanchan, "gold", but that sense is not in the dictionary. In Nepali, a similar-sounding word means the youngest daughter, which is a different word.
