Kumud meaning
Kumud (कुमुद) is a Hindu unisex name of Sanskrit origin, used for both girls and boys. By its first sound, कु, it is a Mithun rashi name (Ardra nakshatra) in the North Indian table.
The edible white water-lily; also the red lotus
Kumud (कुमुद) is Sanskrit ku-muda, the edible white water-lily, Nymphaea esculenta. Monier-Williams records the word as early as the Atharvaveda and renders its parts playfully as 'exciting what joy?'. The lexicons also give it as the red lotus, which is why name lists often say simply 'lotus'. The white kumuda opens at night, and Sanskrit poetry links it with the moon, which Apte records as kumudinī-pati, 'lord of the water-lilies'. As a masculine noun Kumuda also names a Nāga, an attendant of Viṣṇu and a monkey hero of the Rāmāyaṇa. Kumud is used for boys and girls, and Kumudini is its fuller feminine form.
