Snehalata (स्नेहलता) can be read in two ways. Monier-Williams lists snehalatā as one word, snehala, "affectionate", with the suffix -tā, giving "affection, tenderness". Most name lists instead split it as sneha, "love, affection", and latā, "a creeper or vine", and translate it as "creeper of affection" or "vine of love". The second reading is a natural Sanskrit compound but is not itself a dictionary entry. Snehlata is the Hindi spelling and Snehalatha the South Indian one. Snehalata Reddy was a Kannada and Telugu film actress and activist.
