Mamta meaning
Mamta (ममता) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin.
The sense of 'mine', attachment; in Hindi also affection, parental love
Also used to mean: motherly love
Mamta (ममता) comes from Sanskrit mamatā, built on mama, "mine". Its first meaning is just that: Monier-Williams gives it as "the state of 'mine', sense of ownership, self-interest", and also "pride". Over time the word softened. Platts' Hindustani dictionary adds "affection, attachment", and the Hindi Śabdasāgara includes "affection, love" and the love that parents feel for their children, which is how the name is understood today: Indian name lists give Mamta as "motherly love" or "affection". In the old texts Mamatā is also the name of the wife of Utathya and mother of the Vedic sage Dirghatamas. The name is also spelled Mamata.
