Narmada meaning
Narmada (नर्मदा) is a Hindu girl's name of Sanskrit origin.
'giver of delight'; the river Narmada
Narmada (नर्मदा) is the name of one of India's holiest rivers, which flows west across central India to the Arabian Sea. In Sanskrit narma-dā means "giver of delight", from narman, "play, delight". Monier-Williams notes that the river is personified in several ways: as the wife of King Purukutsa and mother of Trasadasyu, as a sister of the serpent people, and as a daughter of the Somapa ancestors. The word is also the name of a Gandharvī. Families who choose Narmada honour the river goddess, and the South Indian spelling is Narmadha.
