A name of Durga and of Lakshmi; also the Ganges
Narayani (नारायणी) is the feminine of Sanskrit nārāyaṇa, the name of Vishnu. Monier-Williams lists it as a name of Durgā and of Lakṣmī, of the rivers Gaṅgā and Gaṇḍakī, and as the family name of Indrasenā, the wife of the sage Mudgala. The goddess sense is strongest in the Devī Māhātmya, whose eleventh chapter, the hymn the gods sing after the goddess defeats the demons Śumbha and Niśumbha, is known as the Nārāyaṇī Stuti, the praise of Nārāyaṇī; devotees chant it during Durga Puja.
