The narcissus flower, to which poets compare beautiful eyes
Nargis is the Persian name of the narcissus. Steingass defines nargis as the narcissus flower and notes that Persian poets often compare the eyes of beautiful women to it, and he lists several poetic phrases built on the word for a beloved's eyes. The dictionary also records nargisdān, a pot or bed for narcissus, and nargisa, a narcissus figure carved in ivory, a word that can also refer to the Pleiades. In Urdu and Hindi the flower is still called nargis. The best-known bearer is the Hindi film star Nargis (1929–1981), whose screen name it was, remembered above all for Mother India. Baby-name lists give 'narcissus' or 'daffodil'.
