Sumbul meaning
Sumbul (سنبل) is a Muslim girl's name of Persian and Arabic origin.
A fragrant flower, the hyacinth; spikenard; an ear of corn
Sumbul comes through Persian from Arabic sunbul, written سنبل. Steingass defines it as a flower, especially of a sweet-smelling plant, the hyacinth, an ear of corn, and the sign of Virgo, and lists compounds for spikenard, Indian spikenard, valerian and wild hyacinth. Persian and Urdu poets compare a beloved's curling hair to the sumbul, and Steingass records sumbul-mū, 'with hair like the hyacinth, fragrant and gently waving'. The related Arabic sunbula, 'an ear of grain', appears in the Quran (2:261), in the image of a seed that grows seven ears. Baby-name lists give 'hyacinth' or 'spikenard', the dictionary senses. The name is used for girls in Pakistan and India.
