Kuyil (குயில்) is the Tamil word for the koel, the Indian cuckoo. The Tamil Lexicon defines kuyil as the koel and, in an old lexicon sense, a word or utterance, and compares Sanskrit kōkila, the source of the name Kokila. In Tamil poetry the koel stands for a sweet voice, and Subramania Bharati wrote a long poem, Kuyil Pāṭṭu, around one. The longer form Kuyili recalls Kuyili, the woman commander who fought beside Queen Velu Nachiyar against the British.
