A raga of Indian music, linked with the monsoon rains
Malhar (मल्हार) is the name of a raga, the Hindi form of Sanskrit mallāra, which Monier-Williams records as a musical mode, with mallārī as its feminine companion. In Hindustani classical music Malhar is the family of ragas sung for the rainy season, including Megh Malhar and Miyan ki Malhar, the version associated with Tansen, and legend says a perfect rendering can bring the rain. Name lists give "a raga" or "rain". In Maharashtra the name is also tied to Khandoba, worshipped as Malhari, and it was carried by Malhar Rao Holkar, founder of the Holkar dynasty of Indore.
