Malav (मालव) is the Sanskrit mālava, the name of the Malwa region of central India; in the plural it means its people, the Mālavas, and it can also mean a prince of the Mālavas. Monier-Williams adds that mālava is a rāga in music, and also a man's name. Indian name lists usually give "happy" or "the earth"; we could not find either sense in the Sanskrit dictionaries, so they appear to be modern meanings attached to the name. Malav is used mainly in Gujarat.
