Bamboo, reed; flute, pipe
Venu (वेणु) is Sanskrit veṇu, "bamboo" or "reed", a sense found from the Ṛgveda onward, and, from the Mahābhārata and later poetry, the flute or pipe made from it. The flute is Kṛṣṇa's instrument. The Bhāgavata Purāṇa gives a chapter (10.21) to the gopīs' praise of its music, often called the Veṇu Gītā, "song of the flute", and Kṛṣṇa as the flute-playing cowherd is known as Veṇugopāla. Monier-Williams also names a Yādava king Veṇu. Indian name lists give Venu as flute, which matches the dictionary. The name is used across India, often in longer forms such as Venugopal.
