Swarit (स्वरित) is Sanskrit svarita, from the root svar, "to sound". Monier-Williams gives it as caused to sound, sounded or accented, and above all as the Svarita accent, the falling, mixed tone of Vedic chanting that sits between the high and low tones and is marked in the Rigveda with a small upright stroke. Indian name lists usually give Swarit as "glorious" or "towards heaven", perhaps by linking it with svar, "heaven". We could not find those senses in the dictionaries, so they appear to be modern readings. Its documented meaning ties the name to sound and sacred recitation.
