Swaraj meaning
Swaraj (स्वराज) is a Hindu boy's name of Sanskrit origin.
Self-ruling; a self-ruler; self-resplendent
Also used to mean: independence
Swaraj (स्वराज) comes from Sanskrit sva-rāj, made of sva, "own, self", and rāj, which means both "to rule" and "to shine". Monier-Williams gives it as self-ruling or a self-ruler, a sense found as far back as the Rigveda, and also as self-resplendent; it records the word as a name of Brahmā and of Vishnu-Krishna, and of one of the seven chief rays of the sun. In modern India swaraj became the word for self-government and independence, made famous by Bal Gangadhar Tilak's call for swaraj as a birthright and by Gandhi's book Hind Swaraj. Name lists give "self-rule", matching the dictionary.
